The term "Char Dham" refers to the four important Hindu pilgrimage destinations located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.

Yamunotri: The Yamuna River originates here, and Yamuna is worshipped there.

Gangotri: The Ganges River originates in Gangotri, which honours the goddess Ganga.

Kedarnath: Kedarnath is the location of the Lord Shiva-dedicated Kedarnath Temple.

Badrinath: This place is home to the Lord Vishnu-dedicated Badrinath Temple.

Every year, a sizable number of pilgrims from all over the world visit India's Char Dham, one of the most significant pilgrimage sites. The Yatra is seen as a pilgrimage for spiritual enlightenment.

Depending on the weather, the Yatra often starts in the months of April or May and lasts until October or November. The Yatra is a trek of around 1500–2000 kilometres, visiting the four locations in order, beginning at Yamunotri, then on to Gangotri, Kedarnath, and concluding in Badrinath.

For the pilgrims, the Yatra is seen as a journey of atonement and spiritual enlightenment. The pilgrims' perseverance is sustained by their faith and commitment despite the tough terrain and weather circumstances along the trip. The purpose of the trip is to atone for sins and receive divine favours.

To protect the public's safety and comfort, the state government and other organisations handle the essential arrangements, including housing, transportation, and medical facilities.
